The Kalispell Architectural Review Committee has selected four recipients for its annual awards program. Projects selected for the awards were developed in 2013 and 2014.
Three Rivers Bank at 233 East Idaho St. was selected for the best addition for the construction work done to the back of the building, seamlessly linking to the existing facade. The stonework is complemented by a wall of windows adjacent to the front door, welcoming customers from the back of the building.
“When looking at remodels for the awards, they’re looking at how well the addition blends into the original,” Sorensen said. “They did a really good job of bringing that together.” Several years ago, Sorensen said, the bank had an aged style and was modernized after a few different projects. The newest addition was the only project on the bank considered for the award.
CTA Architects Engineers of Kalispell designed the addition, while Hammerquist Casalegno led the construction.
The Radiation Oncology building at 343 Sunnyview Lane and The Rock medical office building across the street, at 350 Heritage Way, were also awarded as a dual project for the best remodel. The two separate buildings attracted the review committee as two hospital projects that coordinated together, Sorensen said. “It was kind of adding to the theme of adding a campus feel up in the hospital area, and it was a good example of keeping those goals in mind while they were designing the project.”
Marcello Pieretto of Kalispell Regional Medical Center’s design and construction department designed the Radiation Oncology building, and CTA Architects Engineers designed The Rock. Swank Enterprises built both facilities.

The Rock was a challenging project due to existing site configurations and phasing of construction. The three-story facility is home to several medical practices, and the physicians who own the facility rent two of the floors to Kalispell Regional Medical Center. Much coordination was needed between staff, physicians, and KRMC. Since completion, all parties have expressed their happiness with the facility and its performance.
The existing facility had a very unique design, with the main corridor extending the entire length of the facility and designed as the exterior wall. All of the medical practices were placed on the corridor’s interior, so very little natural daylight filtered into the spaces. For the addition, building along the existing exterior corridor was a natural solution.
This created a partial interior corridor, allowing the offices and lobbies to be placed on the exterior walls and giving most spaces much needed natural daylight. By staggering the new addition from the existing facility, the design still allowed natural light to filter into the existing corridor system.

Three Rivers Bank has been present in the Kalispell community for over 40 years. This three-story, A-framed building is positioned along busy Idaho St., with a lot of visibility. The existing facility was a 10,000 sq. ft. bank housing tellers, a loan department, and miscellaneous management positions.
The renovation project included a 5,000 sq. ft. addition to allow the various departments to expand for future growth while providing a home for their Operations Center. The existing A-frame design was carried through the new addition area. This form had its challenges with creating space on multiple levels, but provided a truly unique design that was emphasized with the window framing on both ends of the building.
Both the interior and exterior of the bank received face-lifts, including modernization of the finishes and bringing new life to a structure that has been recognized in our community for many years.
