CTA design team helps community, scores People’s Choice award in 2015 IIDA Revolution Redesign event

CTA designers Kaare Sola, Jennifer Moore, Sandi Rudy, Tiffany Schimel, and Juan deLeon, along with Art Institute of Austin students Kirsten McCarthy and Stephanie Gussman, joined together to enter  the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association’s 3rd annual Revolution Redesign competition held in Austin, TX. The event had an impressive turnout, and the CTA team took home the People’s Choice award. The design competition and fundraiser offers Austin’s interior design and architecture firms the opportunity to showcase their talents while also giving back to the community by creating a room design for a family in need. The fundraiser portion of the event helps offset the operating costs involved in launching the Austin Furniture Bank, where furniture can be donated, restored, then obtained by people in need and the general public.

Revolution Redesign started this year’s competition off with a preview debuting at SWSX Eco Oct. 7 for attendees and the public to learn more about the designers and beneficiaries involved. The design teams were paired with flooring, textile, and general contractor sponsors, and challenged to use upcycled furniture, recycled materials, and gently used items to incorporate into a beautiful room for a family in need.

CTA’s team worked with a single mother of two bright daughters and spent time getting to know the family before getting to work on designing their dining room that resonated with what the team described as “youthful elegance.” Designers reworked branches collected from Bastrop, TX, for the table stand that was then assembled by DPR Construction. The team also refinished chairs to upcycle the family’s existing dining set. Textiles used on the pendant lamp and window treatments were donated by CF StinsonInterface Flooring donated a plush new area rug, and Mockingbird Domestics donated their time to create a modular furniture set providing storage and seating that delighted the family.

About 20 people from CTA Austin attended the event to support the design team who worked incredibly hard to earn the well-deserved victory, and cannot wait to see what our team conjures up for next year’s competition.

“It was so rewarding to work with Social Design Alliance to create a new space for a family in need. This was also a great team-building experience that made our CTA team even stronger. Can’t wait for next year!”

“There’s nothing better than working alongside passionate, talented people towards a greater goal. I felt lucky to be involved in a project that will hopefully enhance the quality of life for this young family.”
