MET Transit Downtown Transfer Center

This transfer center for the public bus transportation network includes 15 bus parking spaces and a small driver/support building. CTA designed the new building and pedestrian canopy, and was responsible for all surrounding on- and off-site improvements. The work included new shelters, paving, curbs and gutters, and landscaping.
This project netted CTA its first Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System. The facility received all 53 points for which it submitted, which is a first in the nation for this type of building. The project came about as a study of how to improve downtown circulation and reduce exhaust impacts to the residents of the downtown region. CTA led multiple design charrettes with the community, City of Billings, and recognized specialists, who helped establish project goals and details for which strategies would best achieve them. While meeting LEED requirements was always a consideration, this was only achieved due to up-front planning and rigid follow-through.
Type I and Type II ECMs incorporated into this project include:
- Energy-efficient lighting systems including LED
- Occupancy sensors
- Utilization of a vegetated roof to reduce summer cooling and winter heating demands
- Broad roof overhangs to shield windows from direct solar gain
- Ground-source heat pump for space heating and cooling, and domestic hot water
- 5 kWp photovoltaic system
CTA was involved in the site selection process and complex land swaps, sales, and negotiations for land acquisition. Site design considered future development of the U.S. Federal Courthouse, which now resides on adjacent property. CTA designed the site, buildings, and interiors, and provided civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, interior design, M/E/P, signage and interpretive display design, and LEED documentation and submittals. Our team was responsible for local electric utility grant application and award for the photovoltaic system, and has been involved in numerous post-occupancy tours and public education programs.
