For cancer patients, receiving comprehensive and compassionate treatment close to home is vital to the healing process. Providing area residents with this advantage, the Welch Cancer Center at Sheridan Memorial Hospital was expanded by constructing a new 15,000 sq. ft. building which connects to the existing radiation vaults. By reusing the fully functional vaults—often the most costly component of any cancer center—considerable dollars were saved.

The design team was presented with the challenge of transforming an outdated facility into a place of healing that melds state-of-the-art treatments with a modern hospitality-like experience. Materials with an upscale yet durable feel, antibacterial aspects and easy to maintain attributes were selected to provide superior infection control. Clean lines and a soothing color palette provide a functional and appealing atmosphere to the staff, patients and caregivers.
